6th HMD Symposium, June 16-17, 2022, Paris
Old and New Challenges to Longevity Prospects
To celebrate the 20 th anniversary of the launch of the HMD, a
three-day meeting is organized at INED, in Paris, France, on June 16-18, 2022.
The meeting is composed of a two-day Symposium, followed by a one-day seminar.
The purpose of the Symposium is to present and promote cutting-edge research
on mortality and survival, with a special focus on newly emerging challenges like
COVID-19, and global and national longevity prospects in times of uncertainty.
The one-day seminar is dedicated to the study of subnational mortality. Though
in-person attendance to the meeting will not be possible for people not on the
program, you are invited to participate remotely by filling out the registration form.

form that will provide the zoom link to attend the meeting in due time.

Recent Trends and Future Uncertainties in Longevity
The Human Mortality Database Project team invites contributions to the 5th HMD Symposium at Harnack Haus, Berlin. The
Symposium is devoted to demographic, epidemiologic, and public health research on mortality,
longevity, and health across national and sub-national populations. The purpose of the
Symposium is to present and promote research on mortality and survival. Analyses based on data
from the Human Mortality Database (HMD) and the Human Life table Database (HLD) are
particularly encouraged. The Symposium aims at addressing major themes and challenges of
substantive research as well as methodological and data issues. In addition to contributing to the
scientific program, participants are invited to provide feedback and suggestions on the currently
available contents and on the methods used as well as to propose future developments for the
Human Mortality Database Project.
4th HMD Symposium, May 22-23, 2017
Similarities and Peculiarities on the Way to Longer Life in Human Population
To celebrate its 15th anniversary, the Human Mortality Database (HMD) project invites all researchers interested in longevity studies to submit a 300+ abstract or draft paper to present at a forthcoming Symposium organized by the HMD at the WissenschaftsForum, Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin, Germany, on May 22-23, 2017. The event is dedicated to topics on mortality and the length of life in demography, epidemiology, or public health. Its aim is to foster research and exchanges on mortality and survival across time, space and population groups, with analyses preferably (but not necessarily) based on data from the HMD or the Human Life Table Database (HLD). Any topic related to longevity issues is appropriate (whether about methods, data, trends and differentials, or forecasting, in both developed and developing countries). In addition to contributing to the scientific program, participants are invited to provide feedback and suggestions about the content, techniques and setup of the HMD and the HLD.

Expanding Research Opportunities
The HMD Project team organized a PAA member initiated meeting on March 31 - April 2, 2016, in Washington D.C. (United States), at the annual meeting of this organization. The meeting included two parts: a discussion of the Human Mortality Database history, content, challenges and future developments, which provided HMD users an opportunity to propose improvements and to discuss specific needs; and a series of scientific presentations by HMD users highlighting recent research results based on analyses of HMD data.
3rd HMD Symposium, 2010
Expanding the Human Mortality Database: Data by Cause and by Region
The 3rd HMD Symposium took place at INED in Paris on June 17-19, 2010. The general purpose of the meeting was to discuss and facilitate expansions of the HMD to include information on causes of death and regional mortality patterns within current HMD countries. The discussion was devoted to both methodological and substantive issues raised by these new HMD developments, namely: (1) approaches for constructing long-term data series by cause of death that are as consistent as possible over time and across countries; (2) strategies for addressing problems such as small population sizes and internal migration that affect the construction of regional data series. Some presentations further provided examples of substantive analyses using both types of national demographic data, i.e. cause-of-death and/or regional mortality data.
2nd HMD Symposium, 2008
Frontiers and Challenges in the Study of Human Longevity
The 2nd HMD Symposium, which was also held at the MPIDR in Rostock, Germany, on June 13-14, 2008, focused on mortality trends and their determinants, as well as on methodological issues in the estimation or analysis of mortality data. The meeting addressed two particular challenges for mortality research: the measurement of uncertainty in mortality estimations and the need for a fertility database in a format similar to that of the Human Mortality Database. Discussions during the Symposium contributed to the development of the Human Fertility Database.
1st HMD Symposium, 2004
Human Mortality over Age, Time, Sex, and Place
On June 18-19, 2004, the 1st HMD Symposium on human mortality and longevity took place at the MPIDR, in Rostock, Germany. The conference provided a forum to discuss results from research based on data from the Human Mortality Database or similar sources. Leading mortality researchers from around the world participated in the meeting and selected papers from the meeting were published in a special issue of Demographic Research.
